Mothers

I am so grateful for the mothers in my life: my mom, my mother-in-law, Marlene, and my wife Lisa. There is no way I could be anywhere near where I am today, without their support. The moms in my life have set high standards for success.

As I've mentioned before, my mother, Dr. Anne Gershon, was a lead investigator in developing the chicken pox vaccine. While she was breaking glass ceilings in science, Mom was raising a family of five and running a household. She was always there when I needed her, setting an example for me and my siblings, and making the world a better place.

Marlene Post, my mother-in-law, has adopted me as a son. She and her husband, Robert, show me the same warmth they show their own three daughters. Marlene is the consummate professional – a founder of Birthright and head of worldwide Hadassah. Marlene is a leader in the Jewish world of philanthropy, a strong supporter of Israel, and a woman of great warmth and compassion.

My wife, Lisa, is also a working mother, is raising a wonderful family while practicing law at a major firm. Our sons, Logan and Marshall, are blessed to have her as their mom, and I'm lucky to have her as my partner. Lisa is my life's companion – my rock through the campaign.

Mom, Marlene, and Lisa will get cards and flowers for Mother's Day. But what would really make them happy is knowing that all mothers have the opportunity to work and raise families without undo worry.

Paid family leave is an important step in providing mothers in the workforce with job security and peace of mind. No mother (or father, for that matter) should have to choose between caring for an ill child and work, staying home with a newborn and work, or grieving a family death and work.

When Donald Trump was elected, I vowed that I would not sit back and watch him trample our values and reverse decades of progress. I had to do something. Three of my biggest rocks in my run for Congress are the moms of my world. My greatest wish this Mother's Day is that I do them proud.

I'm a businessman, not a career politician, so I look at things differently.
Government cannot fix our problems, but I believe we can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
