Perry Gershon gets my reality

My name is Scott Egnor. I'm 17 years old, and I'm graduating from Ward Melville High School in the town of Brookhaven next week. I helped organize our anti-gun violence walkout, spoke at the March for Our Lives Rally in Port-Jeff Station, and I have been on News 12 to talk about gun control. I want to tell you how I got to know Perry, and why you should support him.

For almost my entire life I have been surrounded by shootings. I grew up in the aftermath of the Columbine massacre, and my elementary school held many anti-bullying assemblies in its response. I was in sixth grade when the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary happened, and I remember seeing my teachers struggle to explain what had happened to us. At this point, "Quiet time" at school ceased, and "Active Shooter Drills" filled its void.

But when you're 12 years old, you find ways to distance yourself from the violence. You have authority figures tell you "That won't be you. No one at your school would do that. Trust that the adults know what they're doing. Stop worrying about this 'grown-up' stuff we call politics."

Parkland changed that. You can't pretend it won't happen to you when you watch the video of bullets flying through classrooms that look like yours. If politicians are only going to give us lip-service to keeping us safe in schools, it is up to us as students to step up.

That is why I am in this fight, and that's why I support and volunteer for Perry. He doesn't pay us lip-service. He still proudly wears his March for Our Lives hat on the campaign trail. Perry is fighting for universal backgrounds checks and a ban on assault weapons. He is not running as a career politician like Congressman Lee Zeldin. He is an activist and a person who, just like me, are fed up with our country being torn apart, and wants to make positive change. Those are the attributes we need in a Congressman.

My classmates and I have sacrificed our weekends, our breaks, and parts of our sanity fighting Republicans who deem that the right for someone to own an AR-15 outweighs our right to live. And you know what? We're winning. We're destroying Republican talking points on gun control.

The NRA is worried. Lee Zeldin is worried. We are shining a light on failures to protect our Long Island community with the most basic gun reform measures.

But we can't do it alone. We need your support. We not only need contributions, but we also need dedicated folks who are willing to knock on doors, call our fellow Democrats, host house parties, talk to your fellow neighbors, and most importantly, VOTE! Don't lose hope in our beautiful democracy. Don't let their forces divide us. I have full confidence that with your support, we're going to win this.

Thank you for standing with us,

Scott
