Statement on "Immigration Roundtable"

Statement from Perry Gershon on “Immigration Roundtable” at Suffolk County Community College, Eastern Campus, Riverhead

Immigration is a serious topic for serious reform and debate. The Trump administration’s policy of detaining immigrant children in cages is abhorrent to humanity and the rule of law. Snatching babies from their parents is simply un-American.

Lee Zeldin's taxpayer-funded, closed-door “immigration roundtable” is no more than a charade. It was designed by his campaign for Lee to look tough on immigration—without the inconvenience of including advocates for immigrant communities.

This is textbook Lee: espouse extremist xenophobic views in front of TV cameras, while not allowing his own constituents in the room. Because Lee did not announce the event would be closed until just before it was scheduled to begin, dozens of people showed up to attend and were prevented by police from entering.

If I had been given a seat at the table, I would be advocating for bipartisan commonsense immigration reform: more sophisticated border security including investments in technology, keeping families together, and creating a fair legal path to citizenship. In Congress, I will make all of those a priority.

We must remember immigrants are a vibrant part of our Suffolk County communities. I’m rooted in lasting, practical and comprehensive policies that respect the rule of law. Enough of this unproductive showmanship. It is time for Lee to face his constituents, the great people of NY-1.

Government cannot fix our problems, but I believe we can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
