A new Congress, but Zeldin disappoints

As we saw the new Congress seated last week, with Democratic control in the House assuming its role as a check on the Executive, I am reminded of the hopeful spirit of America – the idea that we can have a fair society and a government that works for all its people, and not just the privileged few. That is why I ran for office last year, and why I will continue to hold Rep. Zeldin's feet to the fire for his inappropriate actions in Washington and his lack of appropriate actions towards his constituents here in NY-1. America is a great country, yet we can and must be better.

We have a government that is shut down by its President, unable to pay its employees who are still at work, simply because the President is holding the country hostage so he can construct a senseless border wall. We need immigration reform and border security, but good government achieves its goals through rational negotiation, not by making millions suffer in order to make a point. And why cut off funding for Homeland Security while negotiations proceed? Furloughing immigration judges and not paying border security agents is not a path to better border security.

The new Congress voted to end the shutdown. Seven Republicans joined the entire Democratic caucus voting to re-open eight departments – even Rep. Peter King of NY-2. But our newly re-elected representative, Lee Zeldin, did not. Instead, he had the gall to call out Democrats for obstructing, while he personally voted to keep the doors shut. New York currently has six Republican House members. Three of them voted to re-open the government – Zeldin was joined by the disgraced Rep. Chris Collins in his opposition.

The new year and new Congress presented a chance for a fresh start. Zeldin had an opportunity to see the light and govern constructively – to put Country over Party. Rather than saying, as he did on Facebook recently, that the Democrats do nothing but "resist, obstruct, oppose and impeach everything and anything", he could have tried to work as a partner – just following the example of his neighbor Peter King would have been a good start. But Zeldin continued to put blind loyalty to his Party's leader ahead of the interests of our district and our nation. We have no choice but to vote him out the next opportunity we get.

Check out my Facebook posts for news on when and how Zeldin is not serving our needs and to participate in community action against him and for better government. Here are links to recent postings:

Please continue to email me your thoughts, ideas, and news about what actions can be taken, by myself or together with you and other constituents of NY-1, to show everyone that Zeldin does not represent us. We must do everything we can to continue the fight to unseat him.

For 25 years, I have been a common-sense businessman — not a career politician — so I look at things differently. I know about fixing dysfunction. It starts with hard work, a commitment to results, and perseverance — not scoring cheap political points. We can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
