Our country's future is in their hands:

As last week ended, I was moved by two terrific moments: Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic House's steadfast and successful resistance to Donald Trump, and justice (literally) knocking on Roger Stone's front door.

The real accomplishment, however, was the reopening of the government and the unlocking of its potential to move our country forward.

The big question: Will Congress enact new and beneficial laws? Unfortunately, that will be nearly impossible with Trump in the White House and Republicans in control of the Senate.

But the House of Representatives, with its Democratic majority, can pass a clear agenda for the future of America. This establishes a referendum that goes all the way to 2020 and defeating Donald Trump.

What would I like to see? I have a few thoughts:

What does that mean? Investigate Russian interference in our elections and crack down on corruption. Have public hearings on the US role in Yemen and other policies. This list could go on and on. Unfortunately, Congressman Lee Zeldin is not working towards these goals. Instead, Zeldin looks to divide us, to push an agenda which enlarges the cultural and economic divide.

His record is clear. Zeldin consistently voted to keep the government closed and would rather bash Pelosi than work for bipartisan compromise.

Zeldin wants us to think he's a moderate, but his actions once again show his true colors.

Suffolk County is a diverse community with many opinions. We need a representative who listens to all of them, who holds town halls, who does not ridicule those who disagree with him, and who works for bipartisan measures so that his votes represent the majority of his constituents.

Come 2020, the future direction of our country will be on the ballot. Democrats must begin now to define themselves as the party of the future. In the next election, we can replace Zeldin and elect a new President too. This way we enact our agenda into law. Together, we win.

It starts with hard work, a commitment to results, and perseverance — not scoring cheap political points. We can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
