Robert Mueller speaks. Lee Zeldin covers up.

Congress has a serious responsibility: to be a check on potential overreach from the executive branch.

Which is why I was particularly struck by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's words this morning. His thoughts on the investigation into Donald Trump?

If we had had confidence that [Donald Trump] clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.

When the redacted Mueller Report was released on April 19, Lee Zeldin was quick to try to laugh it off, to dismiss the hard work of Mueller's staff and the time they put into the investigation.

This scandal is unfortunate for our country. America would be much better off if Robert Mueller's team had found Trump to be clean, but it clearly did not.

And Lee Zeldin? He took to Twitter (just like Trump) to try to bury the scandal. His words on that day:

The only sideshow here is how Republicans in Congress have acted, how they are putting loyalty to party and president ahead of country and the people they were elected to serve.

What happens next is up to Congress. The American people deserve answers, deserve the whole truth, and leaders who will take this situation seriously.
