The problem is leadership on this sad THIRD anniversary:

One year ago, on the second anniversary of the horrific shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, I said this:

The problem is leadership. With the NRA pulling the strings, with Donald Trump and Lee Zeldin, nothing will change.

That's as correct today as it was then, as it is on every anniversary of an act of mass gun violence here in America.

Lee Zeldin is in the pocket of the NRA and is refusing to lead on this critical issue.

That's just one more reason why it's time for a change.

Let's implement universal background checks.

Let's never again let the NRA control our gun safety policy.

And while we're at it, let's make homophobia a thing of the past as well.

Today, like every day, I mourn the 49 who were killed in Orlando. We feel for the LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities who were terrorized by this shooter, and we demand national solutions.

We must not let this issue fade from our consciousness. Our students deserve a better school environment where they don't need to worry about shootings and shooting drills.

And there remains no excuse for misunderstanding of sexuality to lead a person to mass violence. We are in the middle of Pride Month, and our LGBTQ+ community celebrates our achievements and deserves better than to think of fear.

And I promise you that I will never stop fighting to be part of the change our country so desperately needs when it comes to gun violence.
