It's no secret

It's no secret that our immigration system requires fixing. Cruelty should not be used as a deterrent. Too many are trying to get into the country for us to accommodate.

Regardless of fault, we now have a true humanitarian crisis at the southern border — one I witnessed firsthand.

The core issue remains people fleeing Central America. Lawlessness runs rampant in Honduras and El Salvador and Guatemala. Trump's order to cut off humanitarian aid in the region only makes matters worse. If we seek to end the cycle, the United States must start at the source and work to improve local conditions.

Let's be clear: no one wants to uproot their children, and abandon their lives for the unknown. The journey to the United States itself is perilous and bleak. These are not predominantly the bad people Trump and Zeldin are painting them to be — these are desperate people in search of a better life.

Current US policy hopes to stop immigration by creating inhumane conditions for those who try to come to America. This is not only ineffective, but we must be better than that.

Solutions requires compromise, including the following:

If we want real, long-term results, we must think big. As those in developing economies look to the United States, we must mix security with a fair and workable system going forward.

The modern American economy includes seasonal jobs filled by migrant workers and we must provide a way to get them into the country at sufficient levels. Failing to care for those people would destroy our communities – most pay taxes and contribute to our economy as-is.

Common sense is often the best approach, and in this case, bipartisanship is the only way to secure the votes to pass real policy.

For 25 years, I have been a common-sense businessman — not a career politician — so I look at things differently. I know about fixing dysfunction. It starts with hard work, a commitment to results, and perseverance — not scoring cheap political points. We can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
