Vile and un-American

When my grandparents Murray and Julie came to this country from Russia and Poland, a lot of people told them to go home. New arrivals, and Jews especially, were not welcome in many places. During World War II, my grandpa Bill was part of the liberation force at Dachau, fighting to stop a murderous dictator bent on wiping out entire cultures. At that time, our country turned away refugees who were fleeing the brutality of the villain we were fighting.

We were supposed to have learned a lesson. Our asylum laws were written to be sure the stain of US refugee policy during World War II is not repeated.

Anti-Semitism, like racism directed at people of any origin or skin color, is vile and un-American in the 21st Century. That this even needs to be said today is a scary sign of our regression.

But now, the President of the the United States is not only telling naturalized citizens, but even those who were born here, to "go home", presumably to their roots. If it's certain women of color today, who will it be next? NY-1 is filled with people of varying descent, be they Puerto Rican, Polish, Jewish, Greek, Bengali, Irish, Haitian, Russian, Chinese, Italian, Somali, and from all corners of the globe. Our diversity is our strength.

Yesterday the House voted to condemn Trump's racist slurs. His target should not matter; calls on American citizens to "go home" to their family nation of origin are inappropriate - period.

And yet Congressman Lee Zeldin voted against condemning Trump's remarks. That's disappointing and wrong. It's time for us to reject Lee Zeldin and bring his time as our Representative to an end.

For 25 years, I have been a common-sense businessman — not a career politician — so I look at things differently. I know about fixing dysfunction. It starts with hard work, a commitment to results, and perseverance — not scoring cheap political points. We can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
