An inspiring movement to save black lives

Across Long Island this last week, I joined thousands of local residents in peaceful marches to speak out and say that black lives matter.

From Bridgehampton and Southampton to Shirley and Stony Brook, I joined New Yorkers standing up against racism and violence against black men, women, and children. Not to mention similar events in Smithtown and Bellport and others that I just could not get to.

We've had it. Enough is enough.

Every single one of us—especially those who seek to lead this country—have a responsibility to recognize the conscious and unconscious biases that pervade our culture and our laws, and seek to end them.

We have a president who has no interest in bringing Americans together, in being a peacemaker. Instead, he gleefully revels in racism, shouting down those of us who imagine a better America. Worse, he threatens violence against those of us who stand up peacefully for what we believe in. And our Congressman condemns protesters, never once acknowledging the peaceful demonstrations in his own district.

We must defeat them and their enablers.

And then we must do more. We must be better. We must end the racism.

It won't be easy. It won't happen overnight. It may not even happen in our lifetimes. But we must do the hard work. We must seek to form a perfect union, establish justice, and secure the blessings of liberty for every single person in this land.

In Congress, that's what I'll do. And I expect you to hold me to that promise.

For 25 years, I have been a common-sense businessman — not a career politician — so I look at things differently. I know about fixing dysfunction. It starts with hard work, a commitment to results, and perseverance — not scoring cheap political points. We can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
