The Environment

I first put down roots in Suffolk County after meeting my wife Lisa in the early 1990s. We are so fortunate to live in a wooded paradise, surrounded by beautiful beaches and preserves - the economic lifeline of the North Fork, South Fork, and Brookhaven communities. Unfortunately, these great treasures are threatened by our changing environment, and we must take steps to protect them if we want to share our county’s beauty with future generations.

Our district has two urgent environmental concerns that we must address. First, coastal beach erosion, as a result of rising sea levels, is already damaging homes and businesses. In Congress, I will not only take steps to mitigate our changing climate, but also work with coastal residents and businesses on ways to build resilient infrastructure and strengthen their livelihoods. Global climate change is real and we feel the results directly here on Long Island.

Second, we must protect the aquifer by ensuring that nitrate waste is properly treated so we don’t pollute our bodies of water. Waste management and sewers are a serious issue in Suffolk County that requires cooperation from the local, state, and federal government. If we allow too much nitrate into the ground, we destroy the ecosystems we all rely on. I will act to protect all of Long Island’s waters, for both our economy and quality of life.

Under President Trump, the Environmental Protection Agency has been converted from an agency created to protect American citizens, to an agent of industrial greed. Lee Zeldin has worked in the House, under the guise of "deregulation", to dismantle environmental protections. This year alone, there have been 22 roll call votes on environmental matters. Zeldin has voted with the polluters and against environmental protections on 21 of those 22 votes.

In his four years in the House Zeldin has voted against the environment in 107 of 128 votes. Including:

Opposed climate change protections in 22 of 23 votes.

Opposed 7 out of 7 bills on air quality protections.

Opposed protections for clean water on 19 different roll call votes.

Opposed protecting wildlife in 8 for 8 votes.

We have a choice in November. I promise to work tirelessly to protect the environment - whether that be our clear air, clean water, clean energy production, or protecting wildlife. And I will fight for Plum Island protections in Congress, and to put a bill in front of the President.

I'm a businessman, not a career politician, so I look at things differently.
Government cannot fix our problems, but I believe we can work together to provide opportunity and create an economy that works for all of us.
